The Activity of the Soul
Recently, I was meeting with a friend and I could tell he was carrying a lot of stress. He (much like myself) doesn't carry stress very well so it was all over his face. He shared with me all that was going on in his life and he has some very legitimate things pressing in on him that he doesn’t have a lot of control over. I can relate.
I asked him what he does to “fill up.” He didn’t really have a great answer. This idea of being filled is something that I have also been recently challenged with. I’m not talking about filling my schedule, but filling my heart and spirit. The reason for this is simple; life is going to be hard and filled with challenges. If we only nourish our souls with “emotional cotton candy,” we will find ourselves too weak to retain our peace and joy in times of trial.
Take social media. I have found myself at times looking something up on Facebook intending to only be on for a moment… and then an hour passes. What happened? I got sucked in and I am not the better for it!
So in this post, I want to fight for your soul and your heart. To cut to the chase, I really believe there is only one thing that can fill you and that is God. We are made to depend on Him and to engage with Him in such a way that we remember that He is God and we are not. That’s what worship is. The Psalmist understood this:
Psalms 42:1-4 (NLT)
1 As the deer longs for streams of water,
so I long for you, O God.
2 I thirst for God, the living God.
When can I go and stand before him?
3 Day and night I have only tears for food,
while my enemies continually taunt me, saying,
“Where is this God of yours?”
4 My heart is breaking
as I remember how it used to be:
I walked among the crowds of worshipers,
leading a great procession to the house of God,
singing for joy and giving thanks
amid the sound of a great celebration!
The Psalmist’s thoughts move from desperation to a desire to celebrate as he used to… A desire to worship.
Pastor and author Louie Giglio contends that worship is “the activity of the human soul.” It’s as natural to us as breathing and experiencing our hearts beating… We barely notice it. Yet it is something that we must become aware of, lest we find ourselves giving the best of all we have to empty activities that leave us empty and spiritually malnourished.
I invite you to come and worship with us this weekend and get filled up! We will have Pastor Adam leading us as we being the “At the Movies” series. Here is our song list for the weekend:
